The biggest thing I see people get wrong is assuming that a talented portrait photographer will automatically be great with dogs. And I get it — if someone takes beautiful photos of people, it seems like pets should be easy too. But dogs don't take direction. They don't hold a pose. They get distracted, they get nervous, and every single one of them has a completely different personality.

A real dog photographer knows how to get a dog's attention without stressing them out. They can read body language. They know when to slow down, when to back off, and when to just let the dog do its thing. Before I ever pick up my camera at a session, I let the dog get comfortable with me and with the space. That alone changes everything.

That kind of patience isn't something you can learn in a weekend workshop. It comes from working with a lot of dogs over a lot of time and learning that rushing never works.

The Best Sessions Never Go Exactly as Planned

Here's something I always tell people: the photographers who get the best results are the ones who know how to adjust when things don't go the way they expected.

I had a session once where the dog was really scared every time I moved in close with my camera. Some photographers would have pushed through and hoped for the best. Instead I switched to a longer lens so I could give the dog more space and shoot from farther away. I worked with the owner on how to position themselves and where to hold the treats so we could get a natural, relaxed expression. The dog never felt pressured and the photos came out beautifully.

Another time an owner really wanted a photo of her dog licking her cheek. Super sweet idea but her dog just was not interested. So I pulled out a little bit of peanut butter, put it on her cheek, and within seconds we had the exact shot she had been dreaming of. I do the same thing when I want a genuine smile rather than a panting look. A little peanut butter on a spoon gives me exactly what I need.

These are the little things you only figure out by working specifically with dogs. A general portrait photographer would not think to do any of that.

Dogs Do Better in Their Natural Environment

The best dog portraits I have ever taken were not in a studio. They were outside, in places where the dog felt free and comfortable. Nature, the beach, a park, even their own backyard. When a dog is in an environment they recognize and enjoy, their personality comes out in a way that you just cannot manufacture.
